I was bored today and was just wasting time on the computer when I decided to look up King Radio. I didn't even know if it existed anymore but thought it to be an interesting site. My brother, Marshall Grabosch, worked for King Radio for many years. He died in 1987. I found his name in the 1986 phone directory that you have listed on the site. I wondered if anyone who still works there remembers him. His daughter is now a first year med student at KU. If anyone remembers him, I would appreciate any hearing any stories or comments. Thanks. I know he loved working there.

2/3/2007 No Way! A King Radio site! I worked at Ottawa King Radio from 1979 to 1984 under Marsha Chapman as an inspector and then transferred to Paola and worked under Patty Weaver as an inspector from 1984 to 1986. I decided to stay home and raise my now grown daughters. I remember so many people and have been wondering how everyone was. I kept about the plants closing. Everybody in my family worked at the Ottawa plant and it was my first full time job. My father, Arthur Moore was a A or B tech. He is 82 now. Other family members who worked there are: Sheri Moore, Denise Moore, Janine Moore and my mother, Betty Lindsey.I was sad to see the obit for Edna Saxton. I remember her well. She will be missed.I recognized quite a few other names also in the obituaries. My email address is gaylaclark45@bellsouth.net. I would love to hear from everyone who may remember me. I live in Atlanta now! Funny Note!!! My line in Ottawa gave me a wedding shower in 1980. You won't believe I am still using some of that stuff. I will never forget it! Hi All. I have started receiving hundreds of Spam e-mails a day (169 today), and I think I have managed to delete a few real e-mails sent to the King Radio web site. So I am changing E-mail accounts, The spammers are harvesting e-mail addresses from the web pages using robots, (Or so my server logs say) So I am changing all e-mail links to graphics links and changing the address. Hopefully this will cut down on the spam and I won't miss any real e-mails sent to the King Radio website. Unfortunately you won't be able to just click on an e-mail link anymore, You will have to copy it down from the graphic and then type it into your mail program.

Hi All, I worked in Olathe on the night shift for a year or two, way back, maybe 32 years ago. I fixed KX170 and KN65 DME systems. I was working my way through college. I really enjoyed my job, I memorized most of the part numbers, so I could fix many units each night. Anyone remember me, a guy from California? I slept every other night, trying to make all A's in college so I could get into medical school. What it got me is a divorce, so I don't suggest anyone do that kind of thing. I am now a BSEE and do mostly software design. Hope to retire in a few more years, or when ever my job isn't fun. My how the time goes by, I turn 61 this month. When I first got the divorce, I used my paycheck to pay the house payment. I slept in my station wagon in the parking lot at King Radio at work. My shift ended at 3:30 am. On the second night someone poked a hand gun at me through the window and wanted to know who I was. I was scared until I saw his hp-45 calculator, and I slowly moved my hands, while I explained that I also had a hp-45. That was the closest I have come to getting shot. A very strange experience. I decided to google King Radio on a whim and was pleasently surprised to find this site. I worked at King Radio in Ottawa the first time from 1973 to 1978, then came back for shorter stents in 1981 and 1983. I always liked the work and think about the people often. I viewed the obituary and was surprised to see so many of the people I worked with on it. I guess 33 years is a long time. You will need to add Bernadette Chase and Donna Meek, I am not sure of their dates of death. I look forward to spending more time down memory lane.

I was updating my web page and just for the heck of it, I Googled "King Radio" and found your web site. King Radio was my first employer out of electronics tech school (I started at King when I was just 18). I worked in the Rogers Road plant in Olathe, KS as a "B" tech for a couple of years starting in 1977 on ADF (briefly) and DME (mostly). Although I didn't stay at King very long, I learned much more there than I ever did in school. Where else could you learn to how to repair electronics in a freezer, an oven, on a shake table, and in a vacuum chamber? After leaving King, I worked as a computer field service engineer for a couple of divisions of Raytheon before getting a job as the computer repair tech at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS. While there, I taught myself to program (and took a few classes) and in 1989 was offered a job with Apple Computer in Cupertino, CA. I've been at Apple since 1989 and I'm now a senior software engineer on the Mac OS X team. I looked at the 1981 phone directory and tried to find a name I could remember (I only found 1 -- Ron Hardesty -- another B tech I used to car pool with from Kansas City to Olathe). Anyway, thanks for sharing some of those memories.

The website was down November 11th, 12th, and 13th due to a Hacker. They planted some "Malware" that caused to system to lockout users, It was so new that McAfee couldn't identify it with a name, but did find it with a "Huristic" scan. I had to delete all the webservers and reload them on a new machine from an old backup that did not have all the albums in it. I think I have updated all the pages and added all the albums back in (I think), But if I missed any please let me know. If anyone tried to send e-mail during these days, please resend it. When the server was compromised the e-mail went down with it. The machine the webservers are on is dedicated and no one has access to play or surf on it. There are no other programs running. So this was a deliberate attack on one of the websites that unfortunately took them all down, Please let me know if anything is missing. Mark A. Worley Ottawa Kansas

WoW! Just like old times. A lot of history has been made when we all worked for King Radio. The Ottawa Crew was an amazing family. We all keep in touch somehow. This is one way we can still have memories. later

Wow.. lotsa good memories on this site. Thanks! I was at KRC 72-75, production test technician. Started on the KX-170/175, trained techs at Ottawa on them when the product was transfered there. Later set up the KNR630 line there too. Then did test (all positions) on the KNR665 for a while. Got bounced off that for six months when I rejected too many at final test for random flag drops during the ILS tests. Roamed from KWX40, KDI571, KDI5700, and other models as needed. After field bug reports vindicated me I was reinstated on the KNR665. Finally found the real cause of it's ILS intermittant flag drop, the 1MHz CPU clock harmonics were drifting across the first IF of the glideslope receiver. Engineering fixed it with sticky copper tape. Thought the KNR665 was a heck of a good design. Sorry to see the old place get chopped up and sold, but that's what they teach the MBAs today.

For those who don't remember, Suntron bought EFTC, EFTC was created in Ottawa from the board manufacturing department of King Radio,

The following was taken from Yahoo News on 9/12/2006. Several have forwarded me copies and ask to have it posted.
Suntron will close Olathe plant, lay off 182, Suntron Corp. said it will close its Midwest Operations office in Olathe and phase out 182 jobs.

The 60,000-square-foot facility is at 540 N. Rogers Road. The business provided support for manufacturing clients, through every phase from design to finished product testing. "Unfortunately we, like so many other companies in our business, have too much capacity," Oscar Hager, Suntron's vice president of information technology and administration, said Tuesday. "It was a very difficult decision. We are very actively trying to find jobs for as many people as we can to try and soften the blow for the community."
The company's largest customer remains Honeywell International and its subsidiaries, providing 25 percent of Suntron's business. Hager said Honeywell was the largest client of the Olathe location as well.He said Suntron still wants to provide service to its Kansas City-area clients. The company's nearest locations are in Gardner, Iowa, andSugarland, Texas.Hager said one factor in the decision to close the Olathe location was its lease. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Phoenix-basedSuntron (Nasdaq: SUNN) said the lease for its Olathe location willexpire on May 31. The company pays monthly rent of $26,000 and expectsto record a lease exit charge for the remaining rental payments afterthe transfer of business is complete. The company also considered location, customer base and other factors, Hager said.Suntron said in the SEC filing that it expects to incur $400,000 inseverance costs this month for employees whose jobs will be phased out through December.
It also anticipates spending about $900,000 for moving expenses, employee relocation, recruiting, training and other expenses related to transferring the business to other locations.

Lois McCullough-SmithI was at the Paola plant from 1978 to 1993, and in Ottawa from 1993 to 1994. I spent my first 6 months maybe, in production working for Margaret Duncan and Kathleen Fehling. The rest of my time was spent in Inspection, first as a inspector then as a lead or in the Configuration Control Library working for Patty Weaver and Sharon Croan. My last year was spent in Ottawa in the CCL, after they closed Paola down. I miss the old King Radio days....those were good times! I am still living in Paola. :)

HOW-DEE You have a lot of nice memories scattered over your website and we do appreciate seeing them. I thought the Min Kao picture was Jim Liu at first and was glad to see the Billionaire of GarMin. I did not know him in my tenure. Then International Marketing was off by them selves. There were some people in Intl Mktg that should have their pictures in your sight and I'm sure you would like to put them there. For one is Nancy McCarthy who is now Nancy Cohen. She married a South African millionaire and they live in SouthLake, Texas a spot near DFW Airport. Her email is >> I have some pics somewhere in my boxes of pics that I will endevor to dig out and will be happy to send them to you if and when. Look forward to what ever you have to add to your King History sight. Kind regards,Morgan Kelly & Audrey (Yoder)Kelly

Thank you for running the obituary on my wife Vancene. Ray Peterson suggested it as a way of letting our old friends know of her death. I joined King Radio in Apr 1st, 1970 working in the Customer Service dept for Dennis Hitt. I later became an Airline field engineer and later manager of Airline Sales, reporting to Craig Christie. When Allied bought King in 1985, I was transferred to the Bendix Ft Lauderdale facility. Merritte DeBuhr and I were the only ones to go and Merritte eventually returned, such that I was the only one go that way. I managed airline sales in some manner during that tenure and when we closed Ft Lauderdale in 1997, I returned to Kansas as Director of Worldwide Airlines Sales. Of course some 9 months later, I was transferred to Redmond in the same capacity. I integrated the AlliedSignal team into the Honeywell one when we merged. A few years later in 2002 I decided to retire with 32 years service, at the age of 55 and return to Florida and the sunshine. I was a Florida native originally and had joined King Radio out of the Air Force in Topeka. In addition, when we left Florida 5 years earlier, we kept our Boca home and our son and his wife were living there. I have a son Larry, who lives here in Florida with his wife Jessica and grandson Aidan and a daughter Lisa, who lives in east Olathe, with her husband Jason Cole, near the original King Radio hangar at Executive Airport.

Hi, my name is Joe King. I was obviously never an employee of King Radio, but Ed King is my grandfather. I am just leaving a message in the guestbook to say how much I appreciate the very existence of this website. There are only good things that can be said about the former employees that brought this company from a small business that was running out of a swamp, into a full blown member of the avionics industry. I just want to say thanks, thanks to whomever constructed this website, thanks to all the employees that worked so hard with my grandfather to create, if only in a small way, a piece of aviation and electronics history.

Hi ya Worleybird, You have done a fantastic job with the King-Radio web site!!!!! I do have a couple of Obituary comments. Last I knew Thelma Mealman is alive and well living in Florida. (I speak with her every now and then.)
Please add Karen Herman and Cheryl Bohrn. I didn't have any luck finding their obits on-line. Cheryl passed Oct. 8, 2005 or 2006. I can't remember when Karen passed. There was another lady @ Cedar Creek named Sylvia who always dressed up like Elvira at Halloween. I can't remember her last name. Add Jackie Davin as well. I'll scan her info and send it to you later. Better go for now.
Keep in touch. Regards, Marcia Chapman Garmin International Aviation Product Support

Thank you for creating this web site. I think it's great

This is a great site! I heard about it at a kids softball game in Lawrence from an old co-worker. I started in 1974 just out of high school. Went through the cut throat peer evals that could keep your job or cost it. Moved with them to Lawrence back to Ottawa. Lived through over 5 years of EFTC-Suntron. Got feed up went to massage school, lost my mind and went back for several more years in Olathe. Couldn't take the seven day work weeks. Had 30 years of service,so am now at COF Ottawa. Fit in really well with all the crazy people. Keep up the good work on the site. Great stroll down memory lane!
Kathy (Clingerman) Brown <ladyshadowrider@hotmail.com>

It was interesting to see all the old pictures. My memory of that time is pretty vague, and a lot has happened since then.
I was with King for about 3-1/2 years starting in 1973. It was my second job out of college, and I was just starting to find my way around as an engineer.
My first project was to write software for the KNR665 area-nav computer, working in a group headed by Lewayne Rothers. This was the first exposure I ever had to a microprocessor, and I guess you could say it helped to shape the remainder of my entire career. We were using a microprocessor before they’d even been _discussed_ in engineering school, much less actually taught. My most memorable moment in this design was on a test flight, in a Baron, I think, in which we set up a “virtual” waypoint for a course change. Using the ‘665, the autopilot flew the aircraft over the waypoint, so closely that it was impossible to see because it was actually directly below. Just as we crossed the fix, the aircraft went off in some totally random direction, flew half a mile in a kind of weird spiral pattern, then finally went on towards the next waypoint as if nothing had happened. I found out later that it was a math problem, trying to take the arctangent of zero divided by zero. As anyone with a bit of math knows, this is not a good thing to try to do. So, that goes on record as my very first computer bug. Since then I’ve gone on to create many more.
Later, working for Gene Grillot, I designed King’s first Large Scale Integrated Circuit chip, which became the heart of the KT-76A transponder. We started setting up an LSI lab and by the time I left, we had about 3 other designers and they went on to do several more chip designs.
I left King to go on to Motorola, then Hewlett-Packard, then Sun Microsystems, then Oregon Software, and finally rejoined one of my old HP friends in Colorado in a startup company. (It seems I had a fairly short attention span when it came to jobs.) After a few years of working to create marketing software and large database management and reporting programs for the startup company, I moved to Arkansas because I couldn’t stand the Denver climate, and went into consulting. It was only at this point that I learned to fly, belatedly, at the age of 45.
By sheer chance one day I went to visit Jim Younkin with a design I was working on which used a solid-state gyro. He became fascinated, not with my project, but with the gyro itself. He was a retired autopilot designer from back in the ‘60s who was puttering around with old round-engined airplanes. We became friends and decided to build a little flight director using the gyro and a small 1-chip microcomputer. It worked so well he said, “we’re 90 percent of the way to building an autopilot. Why don’t we see if we could get one running in the Pacer?” So, we did. Of course, he was wrong about the 90 percent, but we still managed to come up with a pretty good modern digital design and started adding all sorts of fancy features – because we could. Somebody found out about it and before long we were getting calls from Lancair wanting to know how soon we could have one for the Lancair-IV which apparently nobody else’s autopilot would fly. At that point, we hadn’t even incorporated as a business! A bit further down the road we got a call from Steve Fossett inquiring whether we would be willing to build an autopilot for a super-secret airplane of his, so we agreed to take it on; it turned out to be the Global Flyer, which did in fact fly successfully around the world using the one-of-a-kind autopilot we built for him.
Our company just grew based mostly on word-of-mouth advertising, until now TruTrak Flight Systems has 24 full timers and we’re building and shipping more autopilots than I would have ever dreamed possible. It was just supposed to be a hobby project!
I’m still married to my very first and only wife, Jane, and I have 3 kids ranging in age from 18 to 26. So far no grandchildren, though.
If there are any people from King who were in Olathe in the early 70’s who remember me, I’d enjoy hearing from them.
Regards, Chuck Bilbe TruTrak Flight Systems, Inc.<chuckb@trutrakap.com>

It was just supposed to be a hobby project! I’m still married to my very first and only wife, Jane, and I have 3 kids ranging in age from 18 to 26.So far no grandchildren, though. If there are any people from King who were in Olathe in the early 70’s who remember me, I’d enjoyhearing from them. My e-mail address is chuckb@trutrakap.comRegards,Chuck BilbeTruTrak Flight Systems, Inc.

I was at King from summer of 1980 to summer 1984. It was a good company to work for and the products served a great need in the avionics world. We had a dixieland band there for a couple of years. I'll try to get some of my photos rounded up. Thanks for what is going to be a great web site. Hope you can put up photos and descriptions of the equipment designed and produced over many years.

Had the chief of police as the Christmas Parade Grand Marshal in it for the parade that Christmas. Thought you might like to know I'm living in Kerrville, Texas now and another Ex-Kinger Dan Walker also lives here in Kerrville and in the same developement. Will forward your email on to him today. Audrey Yoder???? We married on January 26, 1994 and as luck would have it she lives here too. I ran across these pictures in some of my old files and thought they'd be great for your site. Karen's Pictures Aren't they terrific? They are the of the product lines for the KY 90 built in the farm house. The scrap of paper clipped with them says "Dayle E. Lee, Production Manager, checks the production line where the King KY 90 Transmitter/Receiver is being assembled." On the scrap is also a hand written date of 8-29 but no year.I really enjoy your web site and hope you get lots more contributions. I have more at home and will be sending those soon.Best Regards, Karen Honeywell Aerospace Customer & Product Support (WEBMASTER - I will add Karen's pictures as soon as I can, Thank's Karen)

WOW! What memories this brings back. Since being laid-off in Aug '05 after 25 years, I have continued forward, not looking back. But, it is good to remember all the wonderful and silly people that one has encountered along the way. Thanks for the scrapbook.

March 02, 2006 - The website is great and will probably grow now that the word is getting around that it exists. Those of us that are retired, like myself, welcome the opportunity to revisit the good days of our company. Several of the leaders of our Autopilot Group over the years came to my retirement party and I sent you the picture we took of all of us. We also sent it on to Lee Vetter and to Ed King. Thanks for putting the site together.
Art Ercolani

March 4, 2006 Great web site. All of us old hands appreciate it. I hope you can use this photo of the first KRC building. It was near what is now I-35 and 75th. I believe this to be circa 1958.
I have a few more photos but will have to track them down.

Bill Phillips

Debbie Carocari sent me the link to this site. Some pretty cool pictures and memories there. I hope it gets some of us together again. Great job.
Dan Prosser (LBK) <dprosser@aircell.com>
Jan 20, 2006 - Great effort. A lot of us had some great memories at the old Radio Ranch. Don't think we really understood how good it was until we move on or the company changed it strips from King Radio to Mega Corp.
If you are interested here is the link to the old Bendix folks website. Just tried it an it is running real slow this AM. Thought you might like to see some of the things they have put up. The Blue Banaana Are you still working for Honeywell as it is known now?
Merritte
Jan 18, 2006 - One of the old KRC guys sent me the link to your website. I noticed that the Picture you had listed at Tim Delany probably should have been Jim Delany, but in fact the picture is of Merritte DeBuhr, employed there for 21 plus years from 72 to 93. Can you tell me who is putting this site together and connection with Justin King? I was a little confused about the various connections on the site. I might have some old KRC stuff that might help you.
Regards, Merritte DeBuhr
Jan 14, 2006 - Hey DUDE that pretty cool stuff ! but if I am offer some input there are a few corrections you need to fix...----
You have kelly Mcdainles titled on the second picture as Micth Mcneil / and Bob Friday titled as Pat Gordon---

Great job Mark --- but where are You and ME! were KRC people?
P.S. Jack has some OLD 1985 pictures of all of us when I was 165lbs. and Jack had some hair, George was George and Danny Hussher had a head of hair and Kenney pritchard looked like a biker and Ron Thomas well he was just Ron .. Jerry Elwood was stiil looking like 21 and I even think old Eddy young ( bless his soul) was in thoses- might be worth getting from Jack
Dude.. I approve.
BUT you probally should put Gary Berial and Min Keio at the top of the list for the most improved / or most likely to succeed LOL!
Let me know when you have more...
OH I also hated BOB ALLEN-( but not as much as my firend Larry E.) (Comment removed) yeah right!!!!!!!
WEBMASTER_ Edited for content & Name removed to protect the innocent.
Jan 12, 2006 - Hi, mark, this is Ed King 3, son of the founder of King Radio. I live in Eugene, Oregon and run the winery we started. I think you have a great idea and I hope we can help you. One resource should be all the old annual reports. Those were bound and might make a good reference for you- do you have them? And then I think your best option for a wealth of pictures and information will be to reach out to former employees en masse for their personal archives- do you think a mass mailing is possible? I am sure you will be hearing from Dad, but let me know how you are doing and if you need help at all. What was your job at KRC- I am not sure if we ever met?
For all who view this, Please leave a message and let us know what you think
